SMU’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) has achieved its highest position in Asia, ranking third in the 2027 QS Global MBA Rankings and 41st globally.
The result continues three consecutive years of upward movement in Asia: from sixth in 2024 to fifth in 2025, fourth in 2026 and now third in 2027. SMU’s MBA is also the second-highest-ranked programme in Singapore and sits within the top 50 in the world, among more than 400 MBA programmes assessed worldwide.
The rise was supported by stronger employer recognition and graduate employment outcomes, alongside a fourth-place ranking in Asia for Thought Leadership. Together, these measures signal how closely SMU’s business education connects academic expertise with the needs of the workplace.
A stronger signal from employers
Rankings matter most when they reflect value beyond the classroom. The SMU MBA’s latest results point to growing employer recognition of the capabilities and perspectives its graduates bring to organisations.
Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya, Deputy Dean (Education) at SMU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB), said, “Our MBA and MAF [Master of Science in Applied Finance] both ranking third in Asia is a strong affirmation of the quality of an SMU business education and the progress we have made over several years.
“This recognition reflects the calibre of our faculty, the relevance and impact of their research, and the value employers place on our graduates.”
That recognition is reflected in employment outcomes: 86 per cent of MBA students and 78 per cent of MAF students secured employment within six months of graduation. SMU’s commitment to its postgraduate students also extends well beyond their first role after graduation. As the first university in Singapore to offer lifelong career coaching to postgraduate students – and the only one to continue doing so – SMU supports its alumni as they navigate career transitions, pursue new opportunities and grow throughout their professional lives.
“Our focus remains on delivering an education that equips our students to advance their careers, seize new opportunities and lead with confidence in a dynamic and rapidly evolving Asia,” Professor Bhattacharya added.
Nicolas Aldag, General Manager, Stulz Asia Hub Pte Ltd, said, “As a German multinational serving customers across Asia-Pacific, we look for graduates who are curious, adaptable, commercially minded, and able to thrive in an international environment. SMU graduates combine strong academic foundations with excellent communication skills, professionalism, and the confidence to contribute in real business settings. What stands out is their global outlook and ability to work effectively across cultures, qualities that are essential in a regional and multinational organisation. Their performance is precisely why we continue to return to SMU when looking for emerging talent.”
That link between education and career progression is especially significant in Asia, where business leaders navigate increasingly complex markets. The results suggest that SMU’s programmes are gaining traction not only among academics, but also among the organisations that recruit their graduates.
Research that travels beyond the classroom
Both programmes also performed strongly in Thought Leadership, a measure of research influence and impact. The MBA ranks 33rd globally and the MAF 19th, placing both among the world’s top 40.
The results underscore LKCSB’s growing standing as a source of research and ideas that contribute to business and management thinking. Research impact also improved for both programmes in this year’s rankings.
For students, that research strength has practical value. Learning from faculty with deep subject expertise gives MBA and MAF students access to current thinking they can apply to real-world business challenges. For alumni and employers, it reflects an educational model in which research extends into professional practice.
Applied finance joins the top three
The MBA is not the only SMU postgraduate programme to place among Asia’s top performers this year.
In the 2027 QS Master’s in Finance Rankings, SMU’s Master of Science in Applied Finance also ranks third in Asia and 39th globally. It remains the only finance master’s programme in Singapore included in the rankings, as the field expanded from 248 programmes last year to 319 this year.
The two LKCSB programmes’ parallel performance reinforces the strength of a business education portfolio that combines career relevance with academic depth. Almost all teaching faculty hold doctorates and bring research expertise into the classroom.
A broader portfolio of recognised programmes
The strong performance extends beyond LKCSB. The School of Computing and Information Systems’ Master of IT in Business (MITB) adds to this broader portfolio of recognised postgraduate programmes, ranking third in Asia and 37th globally, amongst 234 programmes in the 2027 QS Master’s in Business Analytics Rankings.
The 2027 QS Global MBA and Master’s in Finance rankings assessed more than 400 MBA programmes and 319 Master’s in Finance programmes globally. Both rankings draw on extensive feedback from employers and academics worldwide and assess programmes across five areas: Employability, Alumni Outcomes, Thought Leadership, Value for Money and Diversity.
Taken together, the results across the MBA, MAF and MITB programmes highlight the breadth of SMU’s postgraduate offerings and their growing recognition among both employers and the wider academic community.
Building on the momentum
The results therefore represent more than movement on a league table. They show how SMU’s business education is being recognised from both sides of the university-to-workplace relationship: by the academic community that advances business knowledge and by employers who put that knowledge, capability and perspective to work.
For SMU, the task is to build on that momentum. Third place in Asia is a milestone, but its wider significance lies in what it conveys about the graduates, research and educational experience behind the ranking.
