Finance plays a critical role in supporting nature and biodiversity. In fact, according to a news report by the World Economic Forum back in 2020, around US$44 trillion (about SG$58.6) of economic value generation – more than half of the world’s total GDP – was found to be moderately or highly dependent on nature. It therefore makes sense that governments, organisations, and financial institutions are increasingly recognising the need to account for nature in their strategies and capital allocation decisions.

On 13 July 2023, SMU’s Yong Pung How School of Law (YPHSL) announced the formation of the Asia-Pacific Research Alliance on Law and Sustainability alongside the University of Sydney’s (USyd) Sydney Law School, and The University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) Faculty of Law. This research alliance aims to drive law-focused research and teaching initiatives on achieving sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region and is the first of its kind in this region.

Project Reef Alerts is an Overseas Community Service Project that focuses on marine conservation and contributes to SMU’s sustainability efforts.

The sea surrounds Singapore and is fundamental to its existence as an entrepôt port – and its health supports our own lives. Project Reef Alert, active since 2004, is one of SMU’s student-led Overseas Community Service Projects that focuses on marine conservation and is a part of SMU’s commitment to sustainability efforts. It is one of SMU’s community service projects generously supported by donations from Equinix.
