SMU wins two awards at 2023 QS Reimagine Education Awards & Conference
The 2023 QS Reimagine Education Awards & Conference took place in Abu Dhabi from 11 to 13 December 2023, and hosted a global community of more than 700 participants.
This annual conference and competition have consistently brought together faculty, educators, innovators, investors, startups, employers, and policymakers who are committed to pioneering the transformation of education.
This year, SMU’s Industry Project-Based Experiential Learning (INDEX) programme, also referred to as SMU-X, had the honour of garnering two awards at the prestigious conference – including a silver in the category “The Power of Partnerships”.
The university-wide experiential learning framework is one of SMU’s efforts to prepare students to take on real-world challenges, giving them the opportunity to collaborate on projects with corporates, non-profits, and government organisations.
The SMU-X framework also shifts away from a more traditional approach to teaching and learning, allowing students to take ownership of their learning.
Besides this award, SMU School of Economics (SOE) Statistics-X course (Statistics for Social Impact) also clinched a Gold for “Blended and Presence Learning.”
Principal lecturer of Statistics Ms Rosie Ching, who created and teaches this course, said “Winning the international Gold award is truly an incredible honour.
“Everything I do for my students as their teacher is an ode to all who have taught me, who inspired me with their belief, encouragement, patience and sacrifice, and a lifelong tribute to my parents – my first teachers.”
A continuing commitment to improving learning outcomes
The 2023 Reimagine Education Awards saw more than 1,200 innovative submissions across the 17 award categories, and many were cited for their quality and diversity. The submissions were evaluated by a panel of more than 900 international judges, as well as a Grand Jury consisting of 55 global experts, making the final award wins a great honour.
Awards are made for innovative approaches that enhance student learning outcomes and employability. By honouring these pioneering pedagogical approaches and effective methods of teaching, the Reimagine Education Awards aims to equip over a billion learners worldwide with the requisite skills and knowledge for their future endeavours.
SMU-X and Ms Ching have earned accolades at this ceremony in the past, bearing testament to the University’s steadfast commitment to improve learning outcomes by mobilising innovative pedagogies.
