SMU Alumni Volunteers Appreciation Evening 2025 took place on 27 February 2025, a gathering dedicated to recognising the impact made the University’s exceptional Alumni Volunteers.
The annual event, organised by the SMU Office of Alumni Relations (OAR), was held at the Conrad Centennial Ballroom. It was a celebration of the invaluable contributions made by SMU Alumni Volunteers, particularly in the areas of mentorship, engagement, and outreach.
In her welcome address, Ms Florence Neo (Assoc Alum), Director of Alumni Relations, said: “Reflecting on the past year, I want to express our deep gratitude for the efforts and passion that you, our Alumni Volunteers have shown.
“The OAR team, with our renewed energy and focus, has made significant strides, all thanks to your dedication. This evening, we celebrate not only your impact on SMU, but also the remarkable growth of our alumni network.”
SMU President Professor Lily Kong called this year’s event particularly noteworthy, given that SMU is celebrating its 25th anniversary. In her opening speech at the Appreciation Evening, Prof Kong highlighted the University’s commitment to real-world learning, reflecting that this same commitment was precisely why SMU’s Alumni Volunteers are instrumental to SMU’s success.
“You are not merely volunteers, you are educators, mentors, and industry leaders who shape the next generation,” Prof Kong asserted.
“Through your expertise, experience, and dedication, you bridge the gap between academia and industry, ensuring that SMU remains at the forefront of talent development and innovation. Your contributions empower our students with the skills, insights, and networks they need to excel in an ever-evolving global landscape.”
The evening also saw the inauguration of the Commendation of Long-Serving Alumni, recognising alumni who have shown their commitment and volunteered tirelessly for at least five years on a continuous basis or eight years cumulatively.
Enriching SMU through a strong culture of giving back
Some of the ways in which SMU’s Alumni Volunteers give back are by leading various Chapters and Groups, representing their classes at university events and initiatives and leading the organisation of class reunions and mentoring students as well as more recent alumni.
Quek Fu Jin, a graduate from the Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) Class of 2005 said, “Creating an alumni community that has a support group that continues to grow and build upon itself is indeed important. This effort provides a strong platform for future alumni to look towards as a valuable resource to tap into as they brave their career journey.
“I hope to be able to continue to give back and build strong alumni leadership for a sustainable and resilient alumni community.”
Other SMU volunteers take the time to share their SMU journey at open houses and recruitment roadshows, standing as a personal testament to the power of an SMU education. On top of that, they take time out to attend events where they speak to current students, giving them guidance on a range of topics from class schedules to consulting about careers. Many of these Alumni Volunteers have received guidance from past alumni, adding to SMU’s culture of giving back to the community and strengthening the alumni network.
“It’s hard not to contribute back to a school that has given me so much!” quipped Dewi Tiara Ongkowidjaja, from the Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) Class of 2015, as she shared how she herself had benefitted from Alumni Volunteers who helped her during her years as an undergraduate.
Ivan Chang, from BBM’s Class of 2014, reiterated, “By giving back, we’re creating a powerful flywheel effect. As we support the next generation of alumni, they too will pay it forward, ultimately enriching the University community as a whole.”
During the event, SMU also announced the opening of nominations for the inaugural SMU Alumni Awards.
Alumni Relations director Ms Neo encouraged those in the SMU community, especially the alumni, to nominate deserving alumni who have made significant contributions to not just the University, but also society.
