Framing the inclusion of AI in higher education

SMU brought educators and thought leaders together to examine AI’s real impact on teaching, learning and assessment — highlighting both its promise to personalise education and the pressing ethical, pedagogical and governance questions universities must thoughtfully address.
SMU Overseas Community Service Project (OCSP) Project Gazaab aims to empower youths in Nepal by imparting business knowledge and skills to them, enabling them to realise their potential as entrepreneurs. For the 12th iteration of the project, SMU volunteers from Project Gazaab Nepal XII made the trek to Nepal’s remote mountain villages to teach local students entrepreneurial skills.
To systematically help postgraduate research students, SMU’s College of Graduate Research Studies held the second Singapore Rising Scholars Conference in May 2024, with 60 papers by presenters from 22 institutions around the world.
The launch of the inaugural overseas edition of SMU City Dialogues took place in Bangkok on 9 May 2024, centred around the theme “Growing Asia’s Secondary Cities – Challenges and Opportunities.”
SMU President Professor Lily Kong has been conferred the highly prestigious Royal Geographical Society Victoria Medal 2024 for conspicuous merit in social and cultural geography and in urban research.
SMU has officially launched its representative office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, known as the SMU Overseas Centre Ho Chi Minh City (OCHCMC) – a significant step in SMU’s mission to foster knowledge sharing and regional collaboration as a gateway university in Asia.
SMU Odyssey – an annual student-led mentoring platform for professionals and students to forge connections – this year, embraced the theme Charting the Voyage and drew together close to 800 participants, including 220 alumni and 38 C-suite speakers across various industries.
To mark Earth Day 2024, SMU Engage provides a review of SMU’s recent contributions towards a greener planet through research, thought leadership, achievements, outreach and education.
A book examining the remarkable life and legacy of Dr Yong Pung How was launched at SMU on 11 April 2024. Dr Yong was the second Chief Justice of Singapore between 1990 and 2006 and served as the Chancellor of SMU between 2010 and 2015. In 2021, SMU renamed the School of Law to include Dr Yong Pung How's name as a recognition for his founding contributions to the University.
Assistant Professor Andree Hartanto from the SMU School of Social Sciences has been recognised as a “Rising Star” by the Association for Psychological Science (APS). APS presents the Rising Star Award to outstanding APS members in the earliest stages of their research career post-PhD and recognises researchers whose innovative work has already advanced the field and signals great potential for their continued contributions.
SMU President Prof Lily Kong gave the Keynote Address at the launch event for the inaugural Social Sciences and Humanities Ideas Festival. As part of the Festival, SMU’s College of Integrative Studies (CIS) organised a public lecture titled “Growing Up in an AI-Fuelled World: Reflections on Childhood Amid Digital Acceleration" helmed by SMU Vice President (Partnerships and Engagement) and Professor of Communication and Technology Lim Sun Sun.
